Meta Quest 3S and Meta Quest 3 headsets

Meta Quest explained: history, models & prices

What is Meta Quest, where did it come from, and what is the difference between the headsets? Here’s the starting point for my life inside VR.

My introduction to VR started with laser tag. I saw someone playing Rec Room on Instagram, downloaded it on my iPad, and realised some of the people in the same game were actually inside it with a headset. That was the bit that caught my attention. I wanted to be in there too.

That curiosity led me to buy a VR headset. Today, aHumaann is my character in those spaces: gaming, meeting people, trying creative tools, and making digital content. Meta Quest is the headset platform I use, so it’s the foundation of this journal.

What is a Meta Quest? 🥽

Quest is a family of standalone virtual reality headsets. The computer and battery are in the headset: you can run compatible apps without a gaming PC. Controllers track your hands, while supported apps also let you use hand tracking.

VR: step into a world

A virtual environment fills your view. You might be painting in a studio, standing on a concert stage, or playing a game.

Mixed reality: add to your room

Camera passthrough shows your physical surroundings with digital objects layered into them. The cameras show a view of the room; you are not looking through transparent lenses.

Quest is a way into virtual spaces, rather than one single “metaverse.” Each app has its own design, community, rules, and account features. An avatar in one app may look different from the avatar you use somewhere else.

A short history: from Oculus to Meta

The names can be confusing. The earlier devices launched under the Oculus name; newer headsets use Meta Quest. Here are the five main Quest models that explain how the family developed.

Quest 3S and Quest 3: what changes?

They share the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, 8 GB of memory, colour passthrough and Touch Plus controllers. The important difference for everyday viewing is the optical system: Quest 3 uses pancake lenses; Quest 3S uses Fresnel lenses.

Quest 3 offers higher display resolution and a wider field of view. Quest 3S costs less, but selecting the larger storage option does not change its display or processing power. Both can run titles designed for the Quest 3 generation; check each app’s supported devices before buying it.

What about the older models?

Quest 2 and Quest Pro remain important parts of the story, but Meta announced that sales of both would wind down with the arrival of Quest 3S. If you are considering a used device, check current support, battery condition, controller availability and the specific apps you want. Quest Pro’s eye and face tracking should not be confused with Quest 3 or 3S: neither of those models has the same built-in tracking sensors.

Where would I begin?

I would start with what you actually want to do. A headset is only the doorway. Watching films with people, learning to DJ, painting, exploring a language, and playing an active game are very different experiences.

Use my Quest app library to look around by category. If you already have a headset, spend a little time learning the menu, controller buttons and passthrough before diving into a busy social world. Knowing how to pause and get back to your room makes the whole thing less intimidating.

Do I need a PC?

For standalone Quest apps, no. PC VR is an optional separate route using a compatible PC and Meta Quest Link or Air Link. A PC game is not automatically a standalone Quest game.

Is Quest the same thing as smart glasses?

No. This article covers the Quest headset family. Meta’s other glasses products have different hardware, software and purposes.
