Banter VR

Less standing around. More messing about.

Banter mixes social VR with a playful physics sandbox. The appeal is doing something together: exploring spaces, interacting with a world, and giving a conversation somewhere to go.

01 / The application

A social sandbox with physical presence.

Banter is SideQuest’s physics-based social VR platform. Its official site highlights shared spaces, custom avatars, full-body tracking, and community events such as movie nights and karaoke.

For builders, the Banter SDK provides a JavaScript API for interactive spaces, physics components, and networked multiplayer behaviour. The environment can become something people play with, rather than a background they simply stand in.

Physics and play

An object, movement challenge, or shared activity can give two strangers an easier reason to interact.

Avatar expression

Customisation makes a person recognisable and turns the virtual body into part of the social experience.

Hosted moments

Karaoke, movie nights, and hangouts create a reason to arrive at the same place at the same time.

02 / User journey

Give the conversation an activity.

  1. 🗓️ Find a reason to visit

A hosted event can be a more understandable entry point than an empty space.

  2. 🧭 Get oriented

Learn the environment and controls before rushing into a moving activity.

  3. 🪁 Try something together

A playful interaction can break the ice without forcing a formal introduction.

  4. 🎨 Follow the creators

The people designing spaces and hosting sessions shape what the platform feels like.

The UX question

Can a visitor immediately tell what is interactive, what is safe to touch, and where the social activity is happening? Physical play works best when the world communicates its possibilities.

03 / Community paths

Start with the people making Banter.

Banter community

The official Discord is a route to the people building, playing, and hosting on the platform. Join the conversation ↗ Official community · check server rules

Event hosts

Find community sessions through Banter’s event area, then follow the individual hosts whose interests match yours. Explore events ↗ Official discovery page · schedules can change

A smaller community often grows around a particular host or creative project. These links help you find those organisers without presenting an unverified Discord invite as an official partnership.

04 / UX review

Playfulness, with enough room to pause.

What the design makes possible

A shared physical interaction gives socialising a different texture. Rather than sitting through small talk, people can work out how something behaves together.

Where friction can appear

A visitor may not know which objects are interactive or how movement works. A world needs orientation and predictable feedback as well as spectacle.

Movement should be an invitation, not an obligation.

UX perspective: Energetic environments can be enjoyable and uncomfortable for different people. A clear way to stop, watch, or move to a quieter area makes a social activity more inclusive.

An event needs more than a beautiful venue.

UX perspective: A readable schedule, a visible host, and a clear explanation of what is happening help someone join late or enter alone. The welcome is part of the design.

Custom worlds need clear interaction feedback.

UX perspective: Highlighting an interactive object, showing a short instruction, and giving a visible response make experimentation feel intentional. Otherwise, playful physics can look like a broken interface.

Respect the host, the room, and other people.

Review Banter’s community standards and the rules of the session you join. For streamed content, make recording clear and ask before featuring another person’s conversation. Community standards ↗
